Stuttering is a disorder that can be improved with speech therapy with the help of hypnosis. It is where the normal flow and timing of speech is interrupted. This can involve the repetition of a syllable, prolongation of a sound or a complete block of a word. A recent study showed 12.2% of Australian infants had started to stutter by 48 months of age. Stuttering affects more boys than girls. Before visiting a hypnotherapist, it is important to receive an accurate diagnosis through a medical specialist.
Why does stuttering occur?
Despite many studies, the cause of stuttering still remains unknown. Experts currently believe that stuttering is a physical disorder involving a person’s brain rather than psychological or due to parenting practices. It is known that stuttering tends to run in families and that genetics may contribute to the cause. Stuttering can be made worse by psychological issues such as anxiety and stress.
What are the signs of stuttering?
Speech disruptions due to stuttering can range from mild to severe and can vary between people. Some of the signs of stuttering include:
• Frequent repetition of sounds and syllables
• Excessive repetition of phrases and words
• Pauses in speech
• Vocal tension that results in increasing pitch or loudness of speech
• Facial tension or tightness of speech muscles
• Not speaking to others unless necessary
• Struggling with speech
How can hypnotherapy help with stuttering?
Even though is currently no cure, hypnosis can help relieve some anxiety and stress associated with stuttering. By working with the person’s speech therapist, a hypnotherapist can help minimise the extent of the stuttering. This can be achieved by:
• Using hypnoanalysis (psychotherapy using hypnosis) where the person “unlearns” learnt behaviours
• Changing a person’s beliefs about difficult situations and creating new positive messages
• Teaching new reactions when beginning to feeling tense while at the same time building confidence and self esteem
